Vegan!! What’s a Vegan?
When my husband and I first talked about going ‘vegan’ I have to admit, I wasn’t too sure about it. My first thought was…. We’re going to starve…. and then…. Can a person really live on fruit, nuts, and veggies? I didn’t realize there was so much more to it, and with the support of my husband and daughter, we took the plunge.
First, I emptied all my cupboards and read every label….oh what fun (actually it really was)! Then, I made a shopping list of some basic Vegan staples. I couldn’t believe how little I had in my shopping cart, and how much less my grocery bill was!
The book that got me hooked was ‘Skinny Bitch’ (a gift from my hubby). It gave me a list of additives in our everyday foods that was enough to make me want to stop eating anything with animal products. The two that grossed me out the most were UREA and Gelatin….ewwww!
From there I went online and found a bunch of really good sites with information on what to feed Vegan Kids. The sites covered everything, including which supplements you need for both kids and adults. It’s only been a short while since we removed animal products from our diet, but we all feel so much better and have way more energy. One thing that I noticed right away is that I don’t feel so bloated and sleepy after a meal. For me that’s a really good thing.
Some of the hardest things to remove from our diet were chicken, cheese, eggs, and butter. Oh yeah, and sweets, you know those cookies and pies and pastries we all love so much! Well I’m happy to say that we, with the exception of my daughter, don’t even crave them anymore. My sister asks me all the time…How can you live without meat and cheese? Well, it’s easier than you think…and, everything tastes so much better. When you take responsibility for what you put in your body, it becomes easier and even fun.
As I’m learning new things about being Vegan, I’ll share them here on Raw and Fresh.com. It’s my way of giving back a bit. I hope you and your families will benefit from this knowledge and enjoy a happy, healthy, and meat free life!
All the best,
Christina
